The moment is June 21, 1970. Azteca Stadium, Mexico City. Brazil has just won its third World Cup. Jairzinho —number 7, scorer of a goal in every match of the tournament— lifts Pelé, who raises his fist to the sky. It is perhaps the most recognizable image in football history.
The work is rendered in absolute black and white on a black background, a decision that strips the scene of any noise and concentrates all attention on the two bodies and Pelé's expression.
The euphoria is painted with clinical precision: the open mouth, the tension in the arm, the wrinkled jersey from the grip. The frame —yellow at the top, blue at the bottom, with the green stripe— is not decorative: it is part of the work, the only concession to color, the silent reminder of which flag was waving that day at the Azteca.
